But most heavy drinkers choose to quit at some point, either on their own or with the help of a treatment or self-help program such as Alcoholic Anonymous (AA), the original 12-step program. So why do heavy drinkers decide to change their alcohol drinking? Research I conducted with colleagues at the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom showed that heavy alcohol drinking does not develop in a predictable, linear pattern. Instead, patterns of alcohol use vary a great deal from person to person, and even heavy drinkers typically adjust their alcohol intake as the situation requires. Interestingly, many of the same issues that make people want to drink more can also make them want to drink less. What Makes Drinkers Want to Cut Back or Stop? Roles â€" A new role, such as parenthood, was a reason many heavy drinkers gave for making changes.Comparison with other drinkers â€" Some drinkers noticed they were drinking more than friends and family, which gave them cause to consider whether they were drinking too much.Judgments about drinking â€" For some people, judging themselves, and their own drinking behavior provided motivation to change.Advice to change â€" Professional advice to cut back on alcohol intake from a respected professional was considered sufficient grounds for changing drinking habits.Money â€" Recognizing the expense of drinking would put some people off maintaining high alcohol levels.Health â€" Severe health problems or even side effects of alcohol such as bloodshot eyes or hangovers were discouraging to many drinkers.Body Weight â€" For those trying to lose weight, the recognition of the high calorific content of many alcoholic drinks was enough to make them want to cut back. What Gets In the Way of Drinkers Cutting Back or Stopping Drinking? Roles â€" Some professional roles make it hard for drinkers to avoid alcohol.Comparison with other drinkers â€" Believing you drink a normal amount because it is similar to your peers, having a positive view of others who drink, and seeing other people’s drinking as more problematic than your own can all get in the way of recognizing you are drinking too much.Judgments about drinking â€" Justifying your own drinking can be your biggest obstacle.Advice to change â€" In contrast to professional advice, personal advice from non-professionals can actually strengthen a drinkers’ determination to continue drinking.Health â€" Although much research shows the harms to health caused by alcohol, some heavy drinkers have the misguided belief that alcohol is good for them. Also, when health advice is given by professionals who don’t seem to be healthy themselves, it is not taken seriously.Body Weight â€" Some drinkers use alcohol as a food substitute while they are trying to lose weight. Nathaniel Hawthorne, who was born in Salem, Massachusetts in the year 1804. His ancestors include John Hathorne, who was the only judge who was involved in the Salem witch trials that never did apologize for his actions. So, Hawthorne, added a w to make his ancestral name in order to hide this relation. He attempted many novels; However, The Scarlet Letter was, by far, the most successful. The Scarlet Letter is an engaging and decisive work defined by Hawthorne’s use of symbolism. He used the symbols often throughout the book to create different themes. One of the key themes is that the definition of good and evil are subject to the varying viewpoints of certain people or groups of people and this is clear through the use of multiple symbols and characters. The very first symbol to appear in the novel is the red rose. Hawthorne uses the rose bush to symbolize hope and beauty. The rosebush is the last vision of beauty criminals see before entering the prison where they will enter a depressed state of mind. This new shift in health care that was discussed in the last paragraph is primary prevention and the priority of this model is health education. A major portion of this is risk identification and education about lifestyle modifications to eliminate or decrease these risk factors for certain illnesses and diseases. For example, smoking, nutrition, and physical activity are all modifiable risk factors for heart disease (Crouch 2011). The nurse can do health education about smoking cessation, healthy eating, and exercise in order to eliminate or reduce the risk of heart disease before it occurs. Another example of primary health prevention is immunizations. If given the proper immunizations, immunity will develop to certain illnesses and diseases. This level of prevention is so important to the patient population because it reduces the incidence of disease in the population and creates healthy living and well being. Secondary prevention is essentially the early identification of disease before severe adverse effects occur. A primary implementation method for secondary prevention is screening and diagnostic testing (Grand Canyon 2011). This screening and testing is crucial for early identification and treatment of the disease process. Also included in secondary prevention, similar to primary intervention is risk factor modification. â€Å"The paradox here is that health education and disease prevention activities are similar to those used in primary prevention, but applied to a person or population with an existing disease† (Edelman, C. L. , Mandle, C. L. 2010). Of course the different levels of health promotion will overlap and work towards the same goal. An example of secondary prevention is smoking cessation after the identification of heart disease. There is that aspect of primary prevention, but the patient has already developed the heart disease so it is considered secondary prevention. â€Å"People who stop smoking following onset of coronary heart disease or revascularisation have a substantially lower risk of death† (Carstens 2011). After the development of a disease, it is still of vital importance for the nurse to teach risk factor modification to decrease the risk of severe effects from the disease. Tertiary prevention is implemented when a disease process is already set in motion and the â€Å"defect or disability is permanent and irreversible† (Edelman, C. L. , Mandle, C. L. 2010). The main focus of tertiary prevention is for the patient to obtain their optimum level of functioning and be able to function in society. It is critical to assess the patient’s quality of life and to determine what the patient views as adequate functioning in society. This may require physical therapy, occupational therapy, home modifications, a companion, certain medications etc. Although the patient may be full blown into the disease process, it is still important for health care professionals to implement any interventions that will improve their quality of life. This paper illustrates the developing importance of health promotion and health education in the evolving healthcare field. With the focus of healthcare now shifting to home care, it will be crucial to educate the patient population about the various aspects of their care and how they can become active participants in that care. Nurses can accomplish this by using primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention strategies. Langston Hughes: An Outsider's Voice Of The People Langston Hughes: An Outsider's Voice of the People Langston Hughes is often considered a voice of the African-American people and a prime example of the magnificence of the Harlem Renaissance. His writing does embody these titles, but the concept of Langston Hughes that portrays a black man's rise to poetic greatness from the depths of poverty and repression are largely exaggerated. America frequently confuses the ideas of segregation, suppression, and struggle associated with African-American history and imposes these ideas onto the stories of many black historical figures and artists. While many of them have struggled with these confines set upon them by American society, Langston Hughes did not fulfill this historical stereotype due to his personal wealth, education, and recognized success (Early 1). James Mercer Langston Hughes was born in Joplin, Missouri on February 1, 1902. His father, James Nathaniel Hughes was a lawyer and businessman and his mother, Carrie Mercer (Langston) Hughes was a schoolteacher. The dual income from his parents appropriated him with funds that he used for his education and to begin his poetry career (Langston Hughes 1). This was an advantage unknown to many black Americans at this time. Hughes spoke of the poverty of the black people and struggles that many went through in their lives just to make enough money for their families to survive. Langston Hughes never greatly encountered this first-hand. In Let America Be America Again, he states I am the poor white, fooled and pushed apart. Hughes was never as poor as the downtrodden he spoke of and was never fooled and pushed apart (Presley 1). He also was fortunate enough to obtain a benefactor, which still to this day is considered a rare blessing to aspiring writers. In 1929, he met Charlotte van der Veer Quick Mason, a wealthy widow and for the next four years, was financially supported by this generous woman (Langston Hughes 2). Again in Let America Be America Again, Hughes pleads I am the man who never got ahead, The poorest worker bartered through the years. In comparison to the many African-Americans at the time who were, indeed, struggling with financial burdens, Langston Hughes knew nothing of this uncertainty he spoke of due to his benefactor. The images of poverty that Hughes evokes through his poetry, contribute to the American notion of impoverished black Americans since the days of slavery, however, Hughes' life was very different from the notion he described (Early 3). At this time in history, many Americans were illiterate, especially minorities. Langston Hughes was fortunate to be able to read, and blessed with his talent to write. Due to financial stability, Hughes was able to attend Columbia University and Lincoln University. This level of study was seldom attained by African-Americans. Even though Langston Hughes was highly educated for an African-American of the time, he still used black slang and southern dialects in many of his poems. In Po' Boy Blues, he not only relays the thoughts of black oppression through the factual words of the poem, but through the dialect used. Weary, weary, Weary early in de morn. Reading this evokes images of slavery and the meager existence of poor blacks of the South, but Hughes was not one of these. His own poetry tells the story of the repressed black Americans, yet this also furthers the preconceived images in the readers mind that the writer is, himself, a part of this life style, which he is not. Many are born with the talent to write, but few obtain recognition, especially within their own lifetimes. Langston Hughes' success was even more rare as he was black. He was first recognized as a talented writer as early as 1915, in grammar school as was published in his high school newspaper. In 1925, he was discovered by Carl Van Vechten, and The Weary Blues was published three weeks later.
